Communication Lab is pretty great!
My first meeting with a BE Communication Lab fellow was a very surprisingly helpful experience. That is not to say that I did not expect to get something out of the experience. I expected to get advice on how to make the perfect protein schematic. What I actually walked away with was a great protein schematic AND a real understanding of the module and the lab work that I had gone through up until that point. Going into the meeting, I felt like I had a good grasp on the concepts and what I was trying to show in my schematic. What I learned from attempting to explain the module to the Comm. Lab fellow was that I had only a very shallow general understanding. When it came to specific details, I realized I had not stopped to think them through very well before that point. For the first 45 minutes of my hour long Comm. Lab meeting, we focused only on going through and understanding all the steps of protein cloning, induction, and purification. When the meeting was concluded, I walked away with the help I had come for to create a schematic, and a strong understanding of the module and why specific protein features were so important.
Thank you 20.109 staff for forcing me to make a Comm. Lab appointment. I doubt that I would have gone without being forced to, and I gained a great new resource. I have been back for another meeting with a Comm. Lab fellow, and I plan to have many more meetings throughout the rest of my time in the BE department.
